M.P.S. Student
Marine Biology & Ecology
Sam is from the suburbs of Chicago and moved to Miami to pursue an undergraduate degree in marine science and biology at UM.
After graduating from the U, Sam worked as a scientific diver for a small environmental consulting firm to survey reef and hardbottom habitats. Witnessing environmental disturbances in the field prompted Sam to pursue a graduate degree to increase her understanding of coral host dysbiosis on a cellular level. Sam’s research within the lab includes the validation of a non-invasive method for sampling algal symbionts in coral recruits. This sampling method uses the regulatory process of expulsion to detect the identity of symbiont cells from the tissue. Sam is a very proud mother of recruits and has really enjoyed raising corals during a vulnerable life stage.
