Katherine Coles

Postdoctoral Researcher
Marine Biology & Ecology

Katherine earned her B.S. in Marine Biology from the University of Hawaii and worked at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Hawaii Institute for Marine Biology on coral reproduction, microfragmentation, and cryopreservation. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Miami in 2026, where her work in the Baker lab focused on the resilience of juvenile corals to climate change and the genetic rescue of endangered reef-building corals through assisted gene flow (AGF). In her current postdoctoral position with Dr. Andrew Baker, Katherine is focusing on the science and governance of AGF as a coral restoration and conservation strategy.
