Kate, a California native, has always been deeply connected to the ocean, with diving playing a huge role in her life from an early age. Her love for marine ecosystems began as a child, inspired by her fascination with coral reefs, particularly after discovering Dendrogyra cylindrus during a dive. This remarkable experience fueled her passion for marine science and set her on a path to pursue a career in the field. While studying at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Kate’s journey with the Coral Reef Futures Lab began as a volunteer intern during the summer of 2023.
After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Marine Affairs and a minor in Sustainable Business from the University of Miami in 2024, Kate transitioned to a full-time role as a Coral Recruit Technician at the Coral Reef Futures Lab. In this position, she focuses on the production, rearing, and outplanting of sexually derived coral recruits, as well as aquarium husbandry for both indoor and outdoor systems.
During her time at the University of Miami, Kate also had the opportunity to expand her global perspective through a semester abroad in the UGalapagos Marine Science Program in Ecuador. Outside of her professional and academic pursuits, Kate is an avid underwater photographer, and some of her captivating images have been showcased in exhibits at the University of Miami.
