Julia is a coral nursery technician at the Rosenstiel School’s Coral Reef Futures Lab. As a coral technician, she constructs and conducts daily aquarium husbandry lists, assists with aquaculture life support systems maintenance, and plays a crucial role in the conservation of many coral species. Julia graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2022. She relocated to Miami later that year, and joined the M.P.S. program at the University of Miami with a track in Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management (TME).
During her time at the Rosenstiel School, her coursework drove her to develop a deep passion for corals. She started volunteering at the CRFL’s land- based coral nursery in March 2023, and later accepted an M.P.S. internship position as a member of the Coral Reef Futures Lab. For her M.P.S. research project, Julia studied the effects of varying solar irradiance in an aquaculture setting to observe how differing light availability impacts growth rate and survival of various coral species. Julia has since been employed full-time as a coral technician in the Baker Lab. She cares for the corals housed on land, assists in ex-situ spawning, and acts as a liaison between the CRFL’s land-based activities and the field team, conducting sight surveys, coral collections and outplanting.
