Cameron McMath

Research Associate
Marine Biology & Ecology

Cameron joined the Coral Reef Futures Lab in December 2022. He is employed as the facilities manager for all CRFL land-based coral activities, including asexual fragmentation, sexual propagation, and the rearing of post-larval coral recruits. Cam’s background is in the reef aquarium industry, extensively in the management of coral aquaculture facilities.

At the University of Miami’s coral research labs, Cam oversees the operation of the CRFL spawning lab and outdoor aquarium systems at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric & Earth Science’s land-based coral nursery, as well as the future expansion and improvement of Baker Lab facilities. At RSMAES, he coordinates a team of volunteers, student interns, and coral technicians to carry out the routine maintenance and animal husbandry needed to keep Florida native coral species in an ex-situ environment, and facilitate the conservation and restoration-based research being conducted at the Coral Reef Futures Lab. Other responsibilities include aquarium design & installation, as well as organization of invertebrate transfer. Cam and the CRFL’s reproductive team have successfully induced spawning of several species of Caribbean corals in captivity by replicating environmental cues in closed aquarium systems. Via selective breeding for thermal tolerance and disease resistance, as well as research into the influence and manipulation of coral algal symbionts, we hope to ensure the survivorship of Florida’s coral reefs.
