Liv Williamson

Assistant Scientist
Marine Biology & Ecology

Liv tests intervention strategies to increase survival and fitness of reef-building corals. A self-proclaimed "coral fertility specialist" and "coral pediatrician", Liv's work primarily revolves around coral reproduction and larval rearing. She seeks to optimize outcomes of reef restoration efforts using sexually-produced juveniles, using managed breeding and microbiome manipulation to enhance coral resilience during early life stages. Outside her own research, Liv manages and coordinates all coral reproduction and larval rearing efforts within the Department of Defense-funded X-REEFS Project, and leads all project-related public outreach. A Aside from research, Liv shares her passion for the underwater world with the next generation of environmental stewards through science communication, education, and citizen science, with particular focus on empowering non-scientists, women, and members of underrepresented groups to participate in marine conservation. Liv graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University with a B.A. in environmental science in 2017, and earned her Ph.D. in Marine Biology and Ecology at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science in 2022.
